How can you enjoy your vacation without falling behind at work?

Technology has made communication function like a breeze. While you’re enjoying the cool breeze at Hawaii,, you can simultaneously send all the necessary emails to your colleagues with just a click. However, most of us would not like to take our work with us on our vacations.

Technology has either added more leisure to our work, or more work to our leisure. Although the “virtual” workplace has definitely imparted new freedoms to our lives, the real downside may be the inability to unplug entirely. As HR consultants in India, we are always there to help you with tips and tricks, so that you can manage your work without hindering your personal lifestyle

Here are some tips on how to make the most of a vacation’s restorative effects without wreaking havoc on your job.

Prepare for your vacation

The preparation for your vacation should begin months before you leave. Obviously, you should try and schedule a vacation during a slow time at work, or at least during a break between projects. Give your boss and co-workers plenty of time to prepare by informing them about your plans. Try and tie up as many loose ends as possible before you leave. The last thing you want is to dump a project on a co-worker at the last minute, causing undue stress for everybody.

Create clear outcome

It is a common habit to bounce from one task to another, in order to finish all that you have pending. It may feel like you’re spinning wheels that don’t seem to be turning too fast. If you focus on your three most important tasks for the day, and get those done to a 100%, you’ll not only feel more accomplished, but you’ll also happily enjoy your vacation, without having a bunch of partially done tasks hanging over your head. All this is possible only when you don’t leave any loose ends lying out there at your workplace.

Put your phone away

While you’re on a vacation, try to keep your phone and laptop miles away so that you can avoid your temptation to work. Make a plan to check email only once or twice daily at specific times. If you’re feeling guilty, remember that you’ve earned this time off and you’re entitled to take it. Based on the research, it’s not only good for you, it’s also good for the job if you’re able to return re-energized.

Delegate responsibility wherever possible

If you’ve done all you can to prepare, then this step should be much easier. Try and spread out your job duties as much as possible, so that no single worker is loaded up with all of your responsibilities. If you’ve done your diligence, there should be very little for anyone to do. Make sure to activate an out-of-office email message stating when you’ll be back and whom to contact for what in your absence.

There are reasons why you take a holiday. It is either to spend some quality time with your family, in order to get the solitude that you feel you deserve, or simply take a break from the daily hustle bustle of the city life. While on your vacation, stay away from work to have a completely refreshing experiencing.
